Retaining Walls That Last

Sloped yards create drainage problems, limit usable space, and cause erosion. A properly built retaining wall solves these issues by holding back soil, creating level areas, and directing water where you want it to go. But retaining walls need to be engineered correctly or they fail under the pressure of soil and water.

We build retaining walls and concrete masonry structures in Perth Amboy for residential and commercial properties. Our crew understands soil mechanics, drainage requirements, and proper construction techniques. We build walls that stay straight, level, and strong for decades.

Retaining Wall Options

  • Concrete block walls: Interlocking blocks in various styles and colors
  • Poured concrete walls: Solid, reinforced concrete for heavy-duty applications
  • Concrete masonry walls: Traditional block and mortar construction
  • Segmental retaining walls: Dry-stacked engineered blocks for slopes and terraces
  • Garden walls: Lower decorative walls for planting beds and landscaping
  • Structural walls: Engineered walls for significant grade changes

Why Retaining Wall Construction Matters

Poorly built retaining walls lean, crack, and eventually collapse. The weight of soil behind the wall creates constant pressure, especially when water saturates the ground. Without proper drainage, that pressure increases and pushes the wall forward.

We build retaining walls with adequate footings, proper base material, drainage systems, and reinforcement when needed. Taller walls require engineering and permits. We handle all aspects of the project, from design to final grading. Our retaining walls complement other hardscaping like patios and walkways to create complete outdoor living spaces.

How We Build Retaining Walls

Site Assessment

We evaluate your slope, soil type, drainage patterns, and how you'll use the space. This tells us what type of wall works best and whether engineering is required. Walls over 4 feet tall typically need engineered designs and permits.

Excavation and Base

We excavate the area and create a level, compacted base. For taller walls, we pour a concrete footing to anchor the structure. The base must be below frost depth to prevent heaving in winter. This is similar to the prep work we do for foundation work.

Wall Construction and Drainage

We build the wall with a slight backward lean for stability. As we build, we install drainage pipe and gravel behind the wall to direct water away. Proper drainage is the most important factor in retaining wall longevity. We also install geogrid reinforcement for taller walls.

Backfill and Finish

After the wall is complete, we backfill with drainage-friendly material and compact it properly. The top is capped or finished according to your preference. We grade the surrounding areas to direct surface water away from the wall.
